2026 Burgemeesterskandidate 2026 Mayoral Candidates
Elke Party, Per Munisipaliteit Every Party, By Municipality
South African local elections are not direct mayoral elections — you vote for parties/ward candidates, and the council elects an executive mayor afterwards. A "mayoral candidate" here is a party's public announcement of who they'd put forward if they win — not a formal ballot position. Below is every party contesting each municipality, not only the ones with an announced candidate — so it's clear exactly who we checked and who we didn't.
35 of 153 party/municipality combinations have a found announcement — all DA (see "why" below). Researched from web search results, not directly-fetched source text; verify the source yourself.
Waarom is dit net DA? Why is it only DA?
The DA ran a systematic, multi-wave media campaign naming a candidate for every municipality here (Feb, Mar and Apr 2026). The ANC's candidate process appears to have covered only metros. We found no comparable announcements for EFF, PA, ACDP or FF Plus for these 7 municipalities — that reflects what search turned up, not an assumption they have no plans, and certainly not an endorsement of the DA.
Geen party of munisipaliteit pas by hierdie soektog nie. No party or municipality matches this search.

Knysna
Sitting Knysna mayor Thando Matika was removed by the ANC in September 2026 after the IEC's candidate list (published 2026-09-16) showed him as an SACP PR candidate. No source found explicitly frames him as "SACP's mayoral candidate" — only as an SACP councillor candidate whose defection triggered his removal. As of 2026-09-23, Knysna council had not elected a replacement mayor.
